Francis Kelly Medal of Honor
A group of ex-paras tending graves in Sandymount Cemetery Glasgow unearthed the final resting place of Francis Kelly, who was awarded America’s highest gallantry award – the Medal of Honor. For years his grave was marked with a tiny wooden stake. The cleaned it up and last Sunday, they held an official ceremony marking the unveiling of the new grave.
Francis Kelly was originally from Massachusetts, and served as a wartender in the USS Merrimac during the Spanish-American War.He was one of eight crew members who volunteered to sink it to block the entrance of Santiago Harbour, Cuba, in June 1898.
